Grand Basileus George Grace Speaks on the Importance of Voter Registration in the 2004 Election

At a press conference to be held at the headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women, the heads of the organizations will be joined by Dr. Dorothy I. Height, one of the pioneers of the voting rights movement, President and CEO of the NCNW and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Dr. Height noted that this year marks the 39th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “Those whom we elect this year will be called upon to renew the Voting Rights Act in 2007. Only by registering to vote and then turning out to vote can we be sure our voices are heard by those in power.”

This collaborative Voter Mobilization Campaign being launched today will be rolled out nationally through each organization’s Social Action Commission or Political Action Committees. At the local level, chapters can select from a number of implementation approaches and tactics based upon the needs of the community. The nine Greek letter sororities and fraternities enjoy broad and deep reach in all strata of African American society and their members are uniquely positioned to influence African Americans across the vast expanse of civic, professional religious and collegiate communities across the country.
